How Ghazal Hakimifard played the olympiad
Ghazal Hakimifard scored 6.5 out of 9, the same as Sofiia Hryzlova. She played on boards 3 and 4 and sat out rounds 4 and 9. She won her first five games: round 1 against Natrada Kaewwattha, round 2 against Dema Alaa, round 3 against Sofia Blokhin, round 5 against Robin Duson and round 6 against Kamilla Rubinshtein.
Then came the one loss, in round 7 against international master Tatev Abrahamyan, where 17...Na4 took the b2 pawn and 19...Nd7 cut the knight on b2 off from its way home. The three draws in rounds 8, 10 and 11 closed out the event.
Two of those draws could have ended differently, in both directions. In round 10 against Emilia Deak-Sala, 22.Bf2?! and 25.Na2?! gave the advantage away, and the half point only stayed because her opponent played 47...Rb8 in eight seconds instead of 47...f5. In round 11 against Fiorella Contreras Huaman, 13.Qg3? missed 13.Nf4, 35.Qb5?? threw the winning position away, and only 57...Kf3?? by her opponent opened the perpetual check for the half point.
