Bognerchess at the Open Pula: Chess Against a Historic Backdrop
The 38th Open Pula offered participants not only demanding chess at an international level, but also an extraordinary setting. The Croatian coastal city of Pula, known for its rich history and Mediterranean flair, made the perfect backdrop for nine exciting tournament rounds.
From the very first walks through the city, the imposing Roman amphitheatre drew everyone's attention. The more than 2,000-year-old structure, one of the best-preserved amphitheatres of antiquity, is a striking reminder of the region's long history. Between their games, players had the chance to explore the historic old town and the sights of the Istrian port city.
Bognerchess was represented by Kai Jehnichen, Michael Chobot, and Loris Tavernier. In a strong international field, they faced opponents from many countries and took on the challenge with great commitment and sporting ambition.
Loris Tavernier drew particular attention. As a well-known chess streamer, he was the only participant to play at a board with live camera coverage. This let viewers follow the games live and experience the tournament up close. He handled the added spotlight with composure and proved an excellent ambassador for the sport. With 6 points from 9 rounds, he achieved a strong result and confirmed his playing strength on the international stage.
Kai Jehnichen and Michael Chobot also delivered committed performances throughout the tournament. Regardless of the individual results, what mattered most were the valuable experiences against strong international opposition and the shared tournament trip.
The combination of high-level chess, international encounters, and the impressive backdrop of Pula made the tournament a special experience. The mighty amphitheatre that still shapes the cityscape became, for many participants, a symbol of the trip: a place where history, culture, and sporting competition meet in a unique way.
For Bognerchess, taking part in the Open Pula was a complete success. The memories of exciting games, interesting encounters, and the special atmosphere of the Istrian coastal city will resonate for a long time and already whet the appetite for the next shared tournament adventure.
